Magneplanar 30.7

Magnepan Magneplanar 30.7 Speakers

30.7 wins 2017 “Overall Product of the Year” in The Absolute Sound magazine.

The 30.7 was awarded co-winner of “Overall Product of the Year” along with the $685,000 Wilson WAMM Master Chronosonic

2018 Editors’ Choice, The Absolute Sound, March 2018

This giant, four-panel (two panels per side), four-way, ribbon/quasi-ribbon line source loudspeaker from Magnepan is the best Maggie JV has heard, which is tantamount to saying it is the best planar JV has ever heard (and right up there with the best six-figure dynamics JV has heard). With its highly coherent wave-launch, free standing imaging, vast soundstage, phenomenal resolution of inner detail, lightning transient response, incomparable naturalness of timbre, and total lack of box coloration and diffraction, the 30.7 is markedly less “there” as a sound source (and markedly more lifelike on voice and acoustic instruments) than almost every dynamic-speaker-in-a-box, no matter its price.

The best buy in an ultra-high-end loudspeaker (and one of the best high-end buys of all time), the 30.7 earned JV’s highest, most ecstatic recommendation and TAS’ 2017 Overall Product of the Year award. If you have sufficient room, amplifier, and permission from your spouse—and don’t listen to a steady diet of heavy metal—you cannot do better.

If you have been considering a better Maggie, one of your first questions is likely to be– “How does it compare to the 20.7?”

You already know it is better, but how much better? And how does the 30.7 compare to box speakers in the same price range? Jonathan Valin of The Absolute Sound said- “the best buy in an ultra-high-end loudspeaker I have come across.” Ok, that is reassuring, but you would like to hear it for yourself. More on that later.

Another likely question– “Why is it so big?”

To create a better flag ship model than the 20.7 requires a bigger “canvas” on which to “paint.” We won’t attempt to dazzle you with techno-talk. Keeping it simple– design issues such as lower mass (vs. frequency), better power response and better bass, etc. requires more space (to be exact, 22% more total driver area than the fabled Tympani IVa). These goals were best accomplished with a 4-way ribbon design (another first for Magnepan).

The 30.7 bass panel houses two bass drivers in each panel that literally go from edge-to-edge of the frame to pack the maximum diaphragm area in the smallest possible frame. Separating the bass panel from the tweeter/midrange panel allows greater flexibility for various installations.

A common question– “What size room is required for 30.7s?” Is a room 15 feet wide big enough? The 30.7 photo below was taken at a demonstration at a New Jersey dealer’s showroom. Their sound room is 15 feet wide.

So, how will you hear the 30.7?

We have talked to 20.7 customers and a high percentage bought the speakers without first hearing them. They have owned Maggies for years. They know from communicating with 20.7 customers that do not have “buyer’s remorse.” They are confident in their purchase. Some customers have ordered 30.7s based on the reviews and their prior experience with Maggies. Maybe that is not you.
